Orion Group and Solarium to generate 1,105MW electricity

Bangladesh Power Development Board signed three agreements with Orion Group Bangladesh for setting up three coal-fired power plants with total capacity of  1,087 megawatt. Orion group will build two plants in Khulna and Chittagong with the capacity of 282.67 MW each and one in Munshiganj of 522MW capacity. All three plants will use imported coal to generate electricity. It is the first time in Bangladesh, a local private company will establish coal based power plant. Currently Bangladesh has only one state owned coal based power plant in Dinajpur. Orion Group Chairman Salman Obaidul Karim  said they already bought necessary lands and started development works, the projects to be completed within 45 months and the total cost is $1.4 billion.

Power development board also signed an agreement with Solarium Power Limited to build a solar based power plant. Solarium will setup a solar power plant in Mymensingh with the capacity of 18 MW.  The Managing Director of Solarium, Nazmul Abedin said, the plant will cost Tk. 235 crore, they expected that the plant will be able to supply electricity in two years time.
